What Moose Hooves Can Teach Us About Innovation

What do moose, optimism, and stocks have in common? Stay with us here. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal caught our attention. Many rescue missions, for instance, after natural disasters, are challenged by rough terrain like mud and muck. Recently, scientists have studied moose feet to determine the best way to traipse through these gnarly areas. They determined that the moose’s feet have optimal capabilities to accomplish this. The scientists were able to build silicone feet inspired by the moose’s cloven hooves. What resulted was a 25-pound, four-legged robot, about the size of a cocker spaniel. They then tested it in the woods and creek beds. The hoofed robot sank half as deep, experienced less suction as it pulled its legs from the muck, and because it was easier to walk, it used 70% less energy.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the results were published in Bioinspiration and Biomimetics. They quoted Daniel Goldman, a professor of physics at Georgia Tech who wasn’t involved in the study but said that existing robots that tried to walk on spongy, muddy ground often fail. This new moose-inspired robot may be able to access previously impossible environments to assist in land surveys, security, and rescue work.
Our overriding theme is that ingenuity, technology, and innovation continually lead to a better world, better lives…and long-term rising stock prices. Our belief is reinforced even by quirky stories like this. We are long-term bullish…on science and moose hooves!
