| Market Update
April’s market rebound crystallized into one of the best monthly periods of returns over the past ~5.5 years. Fundamentally, we believe the market’s performance has been supported by robust underlying earnings growth, with the current reporting season marking one of the healthiest periods for upward estimate revisions in recent memory (viz., S&P 500 forward 12-month consensus estimate +5.4% since March 31st, according to FactSet).
When we look further ‘under the hood’ around the drivers of strong earnings growth, we see that so-called cyclical sectors have posted particularly impressive results. Companies within sectors of the economy such as technology, communications, industrials, basic materials, and consumer discretionary have collectively seen year-over-year earnings growth north of 40% in 1Q26. Therein, we believe investment in capital equipment associated with the buildout of AI infrastructure/capabilities has contributed materially.
Going forward, we will be watchful of two factors as it relates to the path of earnings growth: (1) the durability of technology spending and (2) ongoing risks to the consumer from inflationary pressures. We have an optimistic stance on the former in light of recent company commentary. Regarding the latter, the consumer has been partially insulated from the energy market shock in the near-term. If the broad economy remains resilient and geopolitical turmoil resolves, the consumer could be a positive surprise in 2H26. However, if business confidence takes a hit and the impact of the Middle East conflict extends out, conditions in the back half of this year could be more challenging.

The Ins and Outs of Capital Gains
Understanding capital gains taxes is an important part of successful investing. A capital gain occurs when you sell an investment — such as stocks, mutual funds, ETFs, real estate, or other assets — for more than you originally paid for it. The difference between your purchase price and sale price is considered your gain, and it may be taxable.
There are two primary types of capital gains taxes: short-term and long-term.
Short-term capital gains apply to investments held for one year or less before being sold. These gains are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate, which can be significantly higher depending on your income level. For active traders or investors frequently buying and selling investments, short-term taxes can meaningfully reduce after-tax returns.
Long-term capital gains apply to investments held for more than one year. These gains receive preferential tax treatment, with federal tax rates generally ranging from 0% to 20%, depending on taxable income. Many investors focus on long-term investing strategies not only for growth potential, but also for the tax advantages associated with lower long-term capital gains rates.
It is also important to remember that capital losses can help offset capital gains. Investors may use losses strategically to reduce taxable gains through a process often called tax-loss harvesting.
Taxes should never be the sole driver of investment decisions, but understanding how capital gains work can help investors make more informed and tax-efficient financial choices over time. |
