Ray-Ban Meta glasses are marketed by outlining capabilities such as capturing the perfect photo in the moment by simply looking at your subject and saying, “Hey Meta, take a photo.” They offer endless possibilities of usefulness to the general population. However, those who aren’t affected by visual impairments may not realize that a whole new world was unlocked this past year with the release of this AI-powered tool.

Meet Angie Goodnight. For the past 18 years, she has been serving the disabled community of greater Toledo through her various roles at the Ability Center. Angie currently works as a Navigator, where her primary job is to connect individuals who call into the Ability Center with critical resources spanning medical equipment, housing, employment, and Social Security. Angie provides a unique perspective as she lost sight nearly 28 years ago due to developing pancreatitis during her fourth pregnancy.

Angie started to utilize technology early on in her journey with blindness and has fully embraced it as a key part of her everyday life. She has an ecosystem of Apple products, which she says are accessible right out of their boxes. This allows her to independently communicate with others, enjoy entertainment (with Descriptive Narration, if available), shop online, and so on. However, there was a key gap that these products could not offer her: assistance with tasks that required identifying items or reading something non-digital. Now, with the Meta glasses, she can do all those things independently.

Take it from Angie directly, “It’s night and day. You know, without it, I had to depend on everybody else to pretty much tell me everything.” For example, picking out her outfit for the day. Instead of asking a family member to help her find what she’s looking for, Angie just heads to the closet herself with her Meta glasses in tow. She’s able to ask Meta what color, text, or design the clothing has on it to help her determine what she’d like to wear. This demonstrates not only independence to complete tasks without assistance from others but also has unlocked the ability of further choice. Another example of this is reading the menu at a restaurant. Angie described feeling like it was “rude” when asking family members to read all the options for a specific category. She recalled that she would have them read the first few items and quickly pick something within those. Now, with the Meta glasses, Angie can read the menu at her pace without feeling like she’s taking away from her family’s enjoyment.

There are many more examples of how technology has changed Angie’s life. “Thinking back on what it used to be,” Angie reflected, “compared to what it is now, it’s such a difference.”

So, the next time you see the latest and greatest technology released, just know that it may be opening new avenues of independence for those living with disabilities.

And that just might be one of the best results of human ingenuity and innovation.
