Optimism Corner

February 2026 Optimism Corner

By Robert S. Loeb

February 2026

We veer slightly this month in our Optimism Corner piece to northern Italy, home of the 2026 Winter Olympics. As we watch the Olympics, we are filled with optimism about our future. Below, we’ve tried to list some of the reasons, but we’d welcome you to let us know what we missed or if you have others.

1. It’s the peak of human effort

These athletes aren’t just good; they’re the absolute best on earth, often chasing limits we didn’t even know were breakable. Four years for one moment. Miss it, and that moment’s gone forever. They train for countless hours, sometimes in events that don’t register at any other time except during this once every four-year cycle.

2. Country over self

Athletes compete for something bigger than themselves—flag, anthem, history. Their patriotism is inspiring!  What starts as a local dream becomes a national emblem, as these athletes evolve from representing their communities to embodying an entire nation—bringing millions together in a moment of unity.

3. Unknown heroes become legends overnight

Someone you’ve never heard of can become unforgettable in 30 seconds. A perfect race or jump, or a photo finish. An ice skater sticking the landing under intense pressure. A cross-country skier collapsing just after reaching the finish line. A downhill skier defying logic by flying down a mountain faster than we drive our cars. It’s all fascinating and inspiring.

4. Shared global attention

For a couple of weeks, the whole world watches the same events at the same time. That’s increasingly uncommon—and powerful.

5. Stories > stats

Comebacks, incredible sacrifices, family backstories, injuries, politics, faith, doubt, redemption. Someone like world champion Lindsey Vonn coming back after multiple surgeries, only to crash again 13 seconds into her race, is both devastating and awe-inspiring. The Olympics are basically a live-action human drama festival with stopwatches or judges.

6. Grace in winning and losing

You see raw joy and raw heartbreak inches apart. And often—respect. Competitors hugging after brutal defeats. That sportsmanship sticks with people.

7. Timelessness

The rituals—the opening ceremonies, the torch, the medals—feel connected to something ancient and meaningful, not just another season or TV contract.

If we had to summarize it in one line: the Olympics remind us of what humans are capable of at their very best—physically, mentally, and sometimes morally. That feeling helps fuel our optimism about the future!
