Elections, Emotions, and the Long-Term Perspective

As we enter the final months of the 2024 Presidential election campaign, we came across some statistics from the Schwab Center for Financial Research and Morningstar that we felt compelled to share with you. During the time 1961 through 2023, had you invested $10,000 in the S&P 500 only when a Republican occupied the White House, your portfolio would have grown to $102,293. The same investment when a Democrat occupied the White House, and your portfolio would have grown to $500,476. Most significantly, had you stayed invested the entire time, regardless of which party occupied the White House, your portfolio would have grown to $5,119,520!
No doubt there are significant policy differences between the two candidates. We found this article from JP Morgan that did a good job of summarizing some of the main differences. The outcome of the election will likely have an impact on industries and sectors more specifically. Historically, markets are volatile in the eight weeks before a presidential election, and we would expect the same this time around. We recommend keeping the data above fresh in your memory to avoid overreacting should your chosen candidate not win!
